Arise My Love
ARISE MY LOVE (1999) FOR VOICE AND ORGAN, OR VOICE AND PIANO
Mark Nemeskal, Pamela Wolfe and Jennifer Lester
"Arise, my Love" is based on verses from The Song of Solomon, King James Version of the Bible, one of the most famous being the line, "Set me as a seal upon your heart." The setting uses ascending lines to accentuate bold phrases, and the piano either plays a triplet figure or sustained notes often in blocked chords. Additionally, the ending leaves the audience wondering if the lover ever did arise, as there are four repeated descending figures in the piano followed by the lowest notes in the piece ending the song. It's exciting writing that allows for multiple interpretations."
